Public Sculpture
This sculpture celebrates the transformation of the historic Borden building into The Creamery—a place where people will live, learn, work, and gather by the river. Standing as an 11-foot granite arch, it acts as a gateway, inviting the community to enter and feel part of something being reborn.
The form is inspired by the building’s Art Deco architecture and its stepped, ribbon-like roofline—shapes that echo the Mayan temples connected to my own heritage. I wove these patterns into the sculpture’s fluting, which also reflects the movement of the river and the flowing history of the creamery itself. Water and milk—both life-giving, both in constant motion—are referenced in the repeating curves.
Each side of the sculpture carries three flutes, representing the forces that shape this community: the river and the land, the people who have always been here, and the new energy arriving with The Creamery’s revival. These elements rise, meet in the arch, and return to the ground, symbolizing the cycle of growth and the blending of past and future.
Carved from ancient granite, the piece is grounded, durable, and meant to stand for generations. Its open center frames sunrise and sunset, creating a moment of light each day—an everyday reminder of new beginnings.
Ultimately, this sculpture is a welcome. A simple invitation to step through, connect, and become part of the evolving story of this place.
